The Rite of Passage Of A Southern Gem
Clarendon County, South Carolina
Our StoryThe Rite of Passage of a Southern Gem
Born and raised in Harlem, my mother eventually returned to her generational roots in South Carolina as an educator and pastor, blessed with a natural gift for nurturing, land stewardship, and community collaboration.
Her garden is a living archive of family traditions and heirloom practices passed down through time as a rite of passage for youth and elders alike. It is a space designed for resting, napping, and gathering. In our town, outdoor living and open-air kitchens are staples of daily life. Family compounds are the norm, neighbors are family just a field away, and wildlife occasionally wanders in from the distant tree line. It is a place where harvesting pomegranates from our yard and trading them for lemons from a cousin next door is all that is needed to prepare something sweet for Sunday dinner.
This lifestyle is quiet, intentional, and slow on purpose. For generations, our family has come here to rest and cultivate the land, finding a peaceful sanctuary from the busy city lives of our youth, and a homestead to return to in our wiser years. Our churches and schools were built by our own hands. This is our quiet place, and the place where we give back.
This environment formed the foundational framework for my growth mindset, quiet luxury aesthetic, and approach to quiet productivity. Here, we work our daily professions, return home to build together, and bring our harvest to a shared table at sunset while fireflies begin to flicker across the road.
Paired with the fast-paced adaptability of urban life in New York City, this Southern upbringing cultivated resilience, balance, and a drive to scale, grow, and collaborate. The garden is where the planning happens and where conditioning for lifelong success takes root. From learning to serve at a young age to step outside to harvest a fresh salad, brew tea, or enjoy jams made from trees planted by elders who thought of us before our first breath, this lifestyle remains our hidden gem by design.
Integrity, creativity, and empathy shape the way we work.
